Toyota Stops Shipment to Iran

Toyota Motors announced that it would stop shipments to Iran after international moves intended to put pressure, both financial and commercial, on Tehran to curb its nuclear ambitions.

Toyota spokesman, Keisuke Kirimoto, confirmed, “It is true that Toyota has stopped exports of vehicles bound for Iran. We plan to continue to closely monitor this sensitive international situation.”

Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, made the decision after the U.S. and UN placed new sanctions on Tehran this past June.

The decision is mostly symbolic. Both 2009 and 2010 saw only about 222 vehicles exported to Iran.

Iran continues to deny claims made by US and other international parties that its atomic energy program is aimed at producing nuclear weapons.
