Gay Marriage in California

An appeal by the sponsor’s of California’s gay marriage ban was made Thursday with the hopes of stopping a federal judge from allowing same-sex weddings to begin again next week.
Proposition 8, the contested ban on same-sex marriage, is being defended by lawyers to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. They wish to impose a stay that wouldn’t allow gay marriages to occur throughout the duration of the judge’s deliberation.
Last week U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker overturned Proposition 8, on the ground of it being unconstitutional. Walker ruled that same-sex couples could again register for marriage licenses within the week unless the appeals court decided to step in.
The steps of San Francisco’s City Hall were crowded with same-sex couples and their supporters, with the hopes that Judge Walker would give the go ahead for their marriage.

The issue has yet to be resolved now that it is in appeals court.
